The Story of My Blog (AuguStory)

So Robert Birming is doing something called AuguStory, and I'm feeling spontaneous. It's been a long time since I've done a blogging event.

I have to write the story of my blog for this prompt. He has given us some ideas to work with:

How did you first start blogging (what got you into it)
What platforms or sites you've been on over the years
Has your blog changed focus or purpose over time
A post from your early days you'd point people to
What's kept you blogging this long (or what brought you back)

I actually started blogging on GeoCities, except it wasn't called blogging back then. I used to log in every week, create a page, write down whatever I wanted to talk about and then link it back to the page I called "My Journal". People in my real life thought I was nuts, writing down my witchcraft studies, recipes, and thoughts about whatever was going on at the time for a bunch of strangers to read, but the people I met at GeoCities loved it. I called it Stoneybrook Hollow. I still have friends from that site.

When GeoCities shut down, I heard from some friends about this place called Xanga. It was a "weblog" and we started calling it blogging. I loved it! I named that one Maritime Mystic's Kitchen. I still have Xanga friends, too! In time, Xanga went the way of the dodo bird, and I dabbled with LiveJournal, but it wasn't the same. I don't know why it didn't work, but it didn't. We fooled around for a bit and then parted ways and never spoke again. I don't even remember what I called my LiveJournal.

(Insert dubious flirtation with MySpace and then Facebook here from about 2004 to 2008)

I didn't blog for a few years, and I missed it. I found Blogger and did something different: I created a very niche-specific blog about crocheting socks. It's still in existence as a hosted WordPress site now, although I haven't really touched it apart from the occasional update since 2013. I have been considering moving it back to Blogger because it's free over there and I wouldn't have to go in and maintain anything.

At that point, I stopped blogging for myself and started blogging for others. I created a numerology blog in 2020 because I wanted to share the numerology around The Great Fuckening and how it mapped out and reflected everything that was happening. Then I got stuck on a mousewheel, creating content that I wasn't really interested in. What I liked doing was writing about numerology and Tarot. What I have since realized is that what I hate doing is trying to write to keep paid subscribers and potential clients happy.

In 2026, I found Bearblog and started blogging for myself. I actually deleted my first blog here after only a short while. I missed it, though, so I came back in July.
